ThinkPad T430u fingerprint reader

A person has emailed me recently about the ThinkPad T430u Fingerprint reader feature set, which he/she specifically asked whether the ‘One Swipe Power On’ feature is available or not. In my review of the ThinkPad T430u, i briefly mentioned that the ThinkPad T430u does not have the ‘One Swipe Power On’ feature, while Lenovo marketing pamphlets say that this feature is available on the ThinkPad T430u. Intuitively, it would seem that i was wrong in my post, since this feature was available in most ThinkPad classic line, including the ThinkPad T430 and T430s, so logically the T430u should also have it.

But in reality this is not the case, due to:

  • ThinkPad T430u was not designed by Lenovo’s own Yamoto design team, and it lacks the integrated security chip that would make such feature available.

  • I have tested this feature extensively to ensure that this is indeed the case.

Here is an illustration of my example.

  1. For the ThinkPad to have the one-swipe power on feature, the fingerprint reader must have an integrated LED light, which can be turned on during stand-by to indicate it is ready. This LED light is missing in the ThinkPad T430u fingerprint reader.

  2. The One-Swipe Power On feature can be switched on and off within the ThinkVantage Fingerprint Reader software console, which is missing in the ThinkPad T430u.
